What happens during the first consultation?
We begin by simply listening. You share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and we explain the legal landscape in plain language. There is no obligation to proceed further. At the end of the session, we provide a written summary of the ground we covered, so you have something to refer back to in your own time.
Is everything I share kept private?
Yes. Solicitor-client privilege applies to all communications, and Damai Counsel complies fully with the professional confidentiality obligations set out by the Bar Council Malaysia. Nothing you share will be disclosed without your knowledge and consent.
How long does a family matter typically take to resolve?
It varies considerably based on the complexity of the situation, the level of agreement between the parties, and the type of proceedings involved. Mediated or consent-based matters can move relatively quickly — sometimes within a few months. Contested matters before the courts take longer. We are always transparent about what a realistic timeline looks like for your specific circumstances.
Do I need to attend court?
Not necessarily. Many family matters, especially maintenance and access arrangements, can be resolved through mediation or negotiated agreement without court attendance. Where a court appearance is needed, we will prepare you fully so you feel as informed and settled as possible beforehand.
What are the fees, and are there hidden charges?
Our service fees are stated clearly upfront. The Confidential Family Consultation is RM 290. Custody & Support Representation is RM 640. The Complete Family Matter Package is RM 1,070. We discuss scope and any potential additional costs with you before any work begins — there are no surprises.
Can I bring someone with me to the consultation?
You are welcome to bring a trusted person for support. We only ask that any accompanying individual understands that the same confidentiality expectations apply, and that the session remains focused on your needs and questions.
